May 23, 2024 – The NexCities study was finalist for the Research Communications Prize in the poster presentation category for the Climate Solutions Symposium held by the College of Built Environments at the University of Washington, Seattle. The NexCities team was represented by Asst. Prof. Aaron Julius M. Lecciones (University of Philippines Diliman). He presented a poster from the publication of the team, entitled: “Nutrient Recycling and Septage Toward a Green Circular Bioeconomy: A Case Study in Salikneta Farm, Philippines”.
A morning session was set aside for attendees of the symposium to visit the posters gallery. Many of the symposium participants were interested in the work of NexCities and found it very relevant for today’s problems with waste and the opportunities afforded by nutrient recycling in a green circular bioeconomy. The project offers a solution to the huge problem of untreated sewage that flows directly to different water bodies in Metro Manila and poses health risk to people and the environment.
